چکیده

The words here are surprisingly numerous (e.g. there are up to 1,000 such terms in English, whereas not more than a tenth as many words denote kinds of perception). They give rise to a classificatory network, one which is to a tantalizing extent organizable on a hierarchical principle (witness the attractiveness of taxonomic approaches, as Searle and Vanderveken 1985), but which also highlights the fact that families of words systematically cross the boundaries between classes (e.g. argue/warn/advise/suggest~propose/ urge/remind/tell used as asserfives or directives, admit/allow/accept as assertives or permissives, swear/ promise/vow/undertake as assertives or commissives).

Polysemy and Category Structure in WordNet: An Evidential Approach

While polysemy is a form of ambiguity that can complicate natural language processing, it is also a rich lexical resource that yields useful insights into the mapping between words and concepts. WordNet, a comprehensive lexical knowledge-base of English word meanings, is replete with instances of polysemy, but also contains many instances of homonymy, and fails to distinguish between both kinds...

Lexical Resources for Natural Language Processing Systems and the Problem of Polysemy

In this paper I evaluate extant lexical acquisition techniques for NLP systems with respect to the problem of polysemy. I argue that available lexical resources are inadequate for creating computational lexica capable of addressing the generativity of language use. I suggest several desiderata for lexical resources, to increase their utility for lexical acquisition in the context of polysemy: f...

The polysemy of the words that children learn over time

Here we study polysemy as a potential learning bias in vocabulary learning in children. We employ a massive set of transcriptions of conversations between children and adults in English, to analyze the evolution of mean polysemy in the words produced by children whose ages range between 10 and 60 months. Our results show that mean polysemy in children increases over time in two phases, i.e. a f...

Lexical ambiguity in L2: Homonymy and polysemy among Polish-English bilinguals

The M.A. study reported here aimed at examining the processing of isolated lexically ambiguous words in L2 by fluent Polish-English bilinguals. Just as many people speak more then one language (Cook 2002: 22), most words prove to have more than one meaning or sense (Rodd er al. 2004: 90). Consequently, it appears crucial to add the ambiguity factor to the analysis of the lexicon. Indeed, a vari...
